Your outdoor living area can be constructed of various woods or composite materials. There are several different types of wood that can be used to create your deck. The most affordable material that can be used is pressure treated southern pine. Cedar, Redwood, Mahogany or Ipe are other popular varieties of wood that are commonly used but tend to be more expensive. If you are looking for that “natural feel” in your backyard than natural decking materials would be your best choice.

If you are looking for a deck that would require less maintenance and is environmentally friendly than a composite deck is the way to go. Renovations Plus only uses material from top composite deck manufacturers such as Azak, Timber-Tech, Trex and Fiberon.

Various Woods and Composite Decking

Cedar, Redwood, Ipe and Mahogany– If you prefer a more elegant looking deck than Cedar, Redwood, Ipe or Mahogany are great alternatives. Cedar ,Redwood and Mahogany have deep rich colors and natural beauty. They contain tannin’s and oils that help resist rot, insects and decay without any chemicals. Ipe is an exotic hardwood. It is so hard that it needs to be pre-drilled to apply screws. Proper care of these various species of wood is critical to maintaining your decks appearance. Improper technique while power washing or use of chemicals not suggested for each type of wood will adversely affect your deck. Renovations Plus will advise you of all maintenance procedures required to make your deck last as long as possible.

Pressure Treated – Pressure treated wood goes through a process that forces chemical preservatives in to the wood which in most cases is southern yellow pine. The chemicals used help protect the decking from termites, insects, fungal decay and rot. We recommend sealing or staining pressure treated decks to prolong the life of your deck. Pressure treated lumber is available in various sizes to accommodate individual preferences.

Composite Decking– Composite materials have become very popular because of their wide range of textures and colors available. The lifespan of composite decking tends to be considerably longer than natural materials. Composite decking is impermeable to insect damage, will not splinter or rot and is resistant to moisture and fading. If well cared for a composite deck will last for many years and require minimal maintenance. Composite decking is environmentally friendly since it is made from recycled materials. Composite decking can be cleaned with a power washer following manufacturer guidelines. Heavily soiled areas require cleaners specifically designed for composite materials.

Deck Refinishing– Sometimes deck maintenance slips through homeowners busy schedules. Not to worry ! In many cases older decks can be revitalized through a sanding/refinishing process. This process removes most discolorations and splintering  which commonly occur over time. If any boards are beyond repair they will be removed and replace prior to sanding. Once sanded the deck can be restained and sealed with a clear sealant, semi-transparent or solid stain. Renovations Plus has refinished 100’s of decks in the last twenty years.
